=====================================

Last September Dima started having pain in his stomach and went to see a gastroenterologist. He had bloodwork done, and because of bad results he was admitted to the Fifth Children's Hospital for a diagnostic work-up. During the workup, he had a chest X-ray, which revealed a tumor in the thymus area. He then had a chest CT done. After that, Dima was sent to the hematology unit of the Zaporozhzhye Regional Children's Hospital with a working diagnosis of lymphogranulomatosis. His blood was checked for cancer markers, and all the results were negative. The only symptoms he had were enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinal area. The classic signs of Hodgkin's lymphoma were absent (diaphoresis, high fever, malaise). In December he had a thoracotomy with biopsy of mediastinal lymph nodes. Laboratories in Zaporozhzhye, Kiev, and Germany (Berlin) examined the lymph nodes. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was confirmed: Hodgkin's lymphoma (nodular sclerosis, stage II).

At the present time Dima is undergoing a course of chemotherapy in the hematology unit of the Zaporozhzhye Regional Children's Hospital. According to the treatment protocol, after two courses of chemotherapy, it is necessary to have a positron emission tomography (PET) scan in Kiev, to determine further course of treatment. The cost of having a PET scan is 9,000 hryvnyas (860 US dollars).

Unfortunately, Dima's mother is a single parent, currently unemployed and is registered in the Work Center. It is very difficult for her to get together enough money for continuing treatment and for the expensive, but necessary PET scan.

We ask you, if you possibly can, please help in raising the money for Dmitriy's treatment and diagnostic tests.

The family lives in the city of Zaporozhzhye.
