Since her very birth Natasha Kosheva have had the life and the health grounds which bear some resemblance to the roller coaster: one moment she is going up, riding high and it seems that she is about to go home, and another moment she is going down and finds herself in the resuscitation department, where the doctors avoid meeting your eyes when you ask them about the prognosis. So, there is a little girl, a persistent mother who believes in victory, and a never-ending roller coaster…
When I saw the baby in the middle of January there was an oxygen mask next to her and worried Gulnora complained: "Natasha is absolutely languid… she is listless…". The doctors avoided meeting my eyes, when I asked them about the baby’s health. The little girl was far gone, and it was highly questionable if it was possible to stabilize her state, to nurse and to bring her to life. In a few days I heard Gulnora called me and said in a tired voice: "she’s in resuscitation department again… she can’t breathe by herself. Yet again… I just can't take it any more … I’m tired of constant waiting for doctor’s answer, when I ask them "how is she now?"… I’m tired of being at the edge of hope…tired to believe in miracle.
The other day I bumped into the smiling woman in the hallway of contagious isolation and box ward. It took a while for me to realize that it was Gulnora. "Let’s go and see the baby!" – and she carried me with herself – "Take a look! The little one is doing quite good without oxygen! She is so rosy… Look at these rosy cheeks!!!" And in a few minutes a doctor came into the ward and there was a trace of pride in her voice, when she said: "Well, how do you like our princess?! She is so lovely, isn’t she?!" And all of us stood and smiled near the cot.
I wish I could write now that it was a victory. I wish I could write that all the problems are behind, that this little girl will shoot up and develop like every other child. Alas! There is a long way to the victory. Probably, the baby is making her first steps to it. But even this is very important! Even one, two, or three baby steps to the VICTORY are extremely important. It will take a long time for them to recuperate her lungs and nervous system in future. Long struggle lie in wait for little Natasha and her family will have to work persistently.
