Due to oxygen deprivation at birth, Sasha suffered brain damage. The first symptoms of the illness appeared when he was two years old: his fine motor skills and coordination were affected. Sasha became hyperactive and started losing the skills he had acquired. After a series of examinations, doctors diagnosed him with "atypical autism, brain damage."
Sasha is now eleven years old. Every day, he learns basic self-care and behavioral skills. Sometimes, the skills he has acquired are suddenly lost, and then he has to start all over again. Sasha does not speak and communicates with his parents through picture cards. If he feels hungry, he shows the card "I want to eat"; if he's scared, he finds the card "Help." To easily find his socks, there is a card with the corresponding picture on the drawer.
The next step in communication development is to teach Sasha to pronounce simple words and follow two- or three-step instructions. He studies at school under an individualized program, knows the alphabet, and can even write simple words. His mother constantly talks to him, often hugs and kisses him. Tactile contact is extremely important for Sasha as it gives him a sense of security and calm, creating a familiar environment for him. In contrast, loud noises or unfamiliar smells can trigger a meltdown. His parents are also constantly learning how to understand their son so they can provide timely help—distracting him and offering a comforting hug.
To maintain the progress he has made and adapt to regular life, Sasha must continuously work with specialists. Sessions with a speech therapist and a corrective psychologist help in his socialization and prevent him from fully retreating into his own world.
We are launching a fundraiser for Sasha to collect 20,000 hryvnias (about 490 USD). Please support this boy so he can continue to develop despite the challenges life has presented him with, even during the ongoing war.
