Darina has already finished her first grade. Since the beginning of this year the girl’s mother started to notice some bruises on her daughter’s body. She did not make a big deal of it though. Her daughter, like all the other girls of her age, is very active and loves running around with her girlfriends. So, without a moment’s hesitation she sent her little daughter to the kids’ summer camp. A camp doctor was the first one who raised the alarm. Besides having bruises the girl had also been complaining of feeling very weak and having loss of appetite. That’s why the girl’s mom took her for medical examination to the Children’s Regional Hospital where three days later doctors revealed Darina’s terrible diagnosis…
25th of June the girl’s condition suddenly worsened, so she was taken to the intensive care unit where she stayed for five days. There Darina started her first chemotherapy course.
After two chemotherapy courses it became clear that Darina’s body does not respond to treatment (it’s called “a primary resistance to chemotherapy”). Consequently, the main Ukrainian child’s hematologist S.B. Donskaya has recommended undergoing bone marrow transplant surgery abroad.
In the meantime, they have been processing documents and conducting negotiations with a potential Italian clinic that could perform bone marrow transplant surgery. Fortunately, the surgery expense will be covered by “The Lifeline” Ukrainian-Italian program. However, all the other kinds of expenses like travel to Italy, completing of all the necessary documents for the embassy and staying in a foreign country will heavily bear on the family of the sick child. And this is 20,000 euros (27,609 US dollars). Darina’s mother Olga is bringing up her two daughters alone. She receives a child support and some state benefit money for her daughter. Olga cannot really rely on her disabled father.
Darina is currently in remission after the second FLAG chemotherapy course. There’s no time to lose, so the girl’s mother is preparing for their travel to Italy. Thanks to some warm-hearted donors, we have already managed to collect 7,000 euros (9,663 US dollars). But a big sum of 13,000 euros (17,000 US dollars) must still be raised! We’re appealing to the entire world. Please help us, collect this vitally important amount of money so Darina can have her treatment in the Italian clinic!
