Little angel Yevheniya passed away on the 21st of October 2012...

Today I visited Yevheniya, a wonderful little girl, in her hospital room. Such kindness and sincerety were emanating from her! Yevheniya is turning five very soon, and yet she looks so tiny. However just one glance into her eyes makes it clear that she is overly mature for her age. She was speaking with me very quietly, severe cough was troubling the girl and stealing a lot of her strength. She told me that she wanted to become an “animal doctor” when she grows up, and that she had goldfish, two turtles and a parrot at home. She likes colouring books, especially when her mother colours with her. And she is learning letters and can already count to ten, the babysitter often teaches her that.

Yevheniya's mother Ulyana told me the story of her family... I knew it was tough, I just didn't know it was that tough...

Yevheniya was the first child in the family, her mother took very good care of her health when she was pregnant, all the lab tests showed good results, but from time to time she felt some inexplicable anxiety. She delivered easily, the baby seemed perfectly healthy, but on the second day still couldn't defecate. The doctors diagnosed intestinal obstruction but were unabled to help the baby withougt operative treatment. After that there were many days spent in a hospital, a new diagnosis — mucoviscidosis, many tests and hospital stays. By the age of 18 months Yevheniya had already had three intestinal surgeries. And later she had to go to the hospital for check-ups every three months.

Then Yevheniya's little brother was born. As the examination showed, he also had mucoviscidosis. Unfortunately, when he was 4 months old, he couldn't fight the illness anymore and died. So now Ulyana feels even more scared for the health of her only daughter. Yevheniya's father, unable to cope with the stress, started drinking, and then abandoned the family, leaving his wife to take care of their sick daughter alone. He currently pays minimal alimony every month, but those money isn’t even enough to buy special food for Yevheniya, let alone all the necessary medications.

Ulyana is deeply grateful to the woman who agreed to babysit Yevheniya for minimal pay, because no kindergarden would accept Yevheniya due to her health conditions. And thus Ulyana can work and earn at least some money, that unfortunately does not cover the cost of her daughter's hospital treatment. And besides, Ulyana's superiors are not happy with her because of frequent sick-leaves. They have cut her pay, but cannot fire her — Ulyana studies the law and does not let her rights be violated.

Together with Yevheniya's mother we are asking for your financial support. Only with your help the little girl will be albe to take the necessary meds. Full treatment gives children like her a chance for future spent not inside a hospital ward, but at home, a chance to study, grow up, live... And we also express heartfelt thanks to all our dear and caring sponsors.

The family lives in Zaporizhzhia.
